The West Lead Cemetery in Lawrence County was founded in 1879 and was originally a combination of several small cemeteries. It has stood for more than a century and the cemetery located on US Highway 14, near the Homestake Mansion.

Thick patches of weeds overgrow the half-toppled headstones, while grass pokes up through cracks in the old, mossy concrete that covers a number of other gravesites. Deteriorated retaining walls, rutted pathways, and one twisted, metal fence that leaves parts suspended in the air.

The upper half of the cemetery is worlds different with the grass neatly trimmed and most of the sites in good repair. The difference between the two? Ownership.

The upper portion was designated for members of the Masonic Order and their families, while the lower and northern portions were reserved for members of the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. Also included among them are the numerous, notable early-day residents from several of the Homestake Mining Company’s superintendents (or general managers), who lie buried in the uppermost section of the cemetery.

All three organizations once had a strong presence in the city and shared ownership of the cemetery since its establishment in 1879. While the Masons are still a functioning group in Lead, the Odd Fellows' members are aging, and the Knights have all left South Dakota in its entirety. As a result, several portions of the cemetery stand largely untouched, apart from volunteers lending a hand once in a while to pick up branches.

Outside the West Lead Cemetery stands a donation box with a sign that reads, "The West Lead Cemetery is a private cemetery and receives no public funding. All donations will directly support the care and maintenance of this cemetery. Thank You."

Another early city burial ground, the South Lead Cemetery, is situated across the gulch on a hilltop near Homestake's Ross Shaft. It combines an early Catholic cemetery with adjoining Protestant site. South Lead Cemetery is particularly noted as the resting place of large numbers or Lead's early Italian, Slavonian, and Finnish residents, with many headstone inscriptions in the native language of the deceased.

Mesabi Black granite is a beautiful domestic color quarried right here in the midwest mined out of the town Babbit in Minnesota. There is a translucent gray contrast in this granite that gives the illusion of depth that is favored among designers. We currently have a standard sized companion upright at our office that won't disappoint!
